Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) are the first number you encounter when sourcing NFC tags — and often the first point of confusion. Here's what's normal, what's negotiable, and what to be wary of.

Why MOQs Exist

It's not arbitrary. Roll-to-roll production has fixed setup costs: material loading, calibration, first-article inspection. A production run of 500 tags and 50,000 tags share most of the same setup effort — the MOQ ensures the run is worth the machine time.

Factories can often flex, especially when:

• You're ordering a standard product (no custom tooling)
• You combine multiple SKUs into one shipment (the factory's real cost is per setup, not per SKU)
• You commit to a follow-up order — "500 now, 5,000 next month if quality passes" is a credible pitch

What's not flexible: custom die-cutting below tooling amortization, and chip-specific runs where the wafer lot itself has a minimum.

When "No MOQ" Is a Red Flag

If a supplier offers unlimited flexibility on quantity and customization, they're almost certainly a trading company that will buy your 200 pieces from someone else's overstock — with no control over chip authenticity, storage conditions, or encoding consistency. For serious projects, a stated MOQ is a sign of a real production operation.

Smart First-Order Strategy

1. Order a sample lot (50–200 pcs) to verify quality and encoding
2. Run your actual application test — not just "does it scan" but your full workflow
3. Place a pilot order at MOQ (500–1,000 pcs)
4. Scale up once real-world data confirms consistency

This costs a little more per unit upfront but protects you from a five-figure mistake later.
