The Four-Step Setup
Step 1: Create your asset inventory
Before touching any tags, list what you're tracking: asset ID, location, owner, status. This can be a spreadsheet or a dedicated tool β the point is having a single source of truth for what exists.
Step 2: Encode the tags
Each tag gets a unique identifier. Two approaches:
- URL-based: tag opens a web page for that asset (works with any phone, no app needed)
- UID-based: use the chip's factory-unique ID as the database key (no writing required, tap-and-look-up)

Step 3: Tag placement matters
- On metal assets (IT racks, machinery): use anti-metal tags β standard tags will fail or read unreliably
- Flat, clean surfaces: standard adhesive stickers work on plastic, glass, painted metal (non-metal-surface)
- Consistent position: pick one spot per asset category (e.g., top-right corner of every laptop) so scanning becomes muscle memory
Step 4: Build the scanning habit
The failure mode of every asset tracking system is people not scanning. Make it one tap: NFC triggers the action (open the asset page, log the maintenance entry, check the item out) with zero app navigation.
