What You Need
- One NFC tag (NTAG213 or NTAG215 both work β the payload is small)
- An Android phone with NFC, or iPhone with iOS 13+
- A free NFC writing app
Android Setup (3 Steps)
- Install NFC Tools (free, Play Store)
- Go to Write β Add a record β WiFi network β enter SSID, password, security type
- Tap Write and hold the tag to your phone's back β done
When a guest taps the tag with an Android phone, they'll be prompted to join the network with credentials pre-filled.
iPhone Setup (3 Steps)
- Install NFC Tools (free, App Store)
- Same as above β Write β Add record β WiFi network
- Hold the tag near the iPhone's top edge to write
iOS limitation: iPhones can read the tag and show the network info, but iOS doesn't auto-join WiFi from NFC (Apple restricts this system-level action). The workaround that works well: encode the tag with a URL to a simple page that displays the password for copying. Guests tap, see the password, copy, join β still far better than reading it off a router label.
Where to Place the Tag
- Cafes/restaurants: on the table or by the register, marked "Tap for WiFi"
- Hotels: on the nightstand card or desk
- Offices: in meeting rooms and lobby
- Home: by the entryway for guests
Pro Tips
- Print "Tap for WiFi" on the tag (we can do this with custom printing) β unmarked tags don't get used
- Lock the tag after writing to prevent tampering β we can deliver pre-encoded and locked
- Guest network: put visitors on a separate network from your main infrastructure
