Not all NFC tags are created equal β same chip model, wildly different reliability depending on manufacturing quality. Before committing to a bulk order, run these four checks on your sample lot.
Test 1: Chip Authenticity
Free apps like NFC Tools (Android/iOS) report the chip model when you scan a tag. Verify it matches what you ordered β "NTAG215" should show as exactly that, not a generic identifier. Counterfeit or substituted chips are the most common quality problem in low-cost supply chains.
Test 2: Read/Write Reliability
Write and rewrite each sample tag 10β20 times using the same app. Watch for:
- Failed writes β a tag that errors during rewrites will fail in the field
- Slow response β a 1β2 second lag on write suggests a weak antenna coupling
- Data corruption β read back after each write and compare
Test 3: Physical Durability
Depending on your use case:
- Adhesion test: stick to your actual target surface, wait 24 hours, try to peel. The adhesive should resist a firm pull.
- Water test: submerge a tag in water for 1 hour, dry, re-scan. Waterproof-rated tags should pass without any change.
- Bend test: for tags that will flex (wearables, curved surfaces), bend 20 times over a 5mm radius and re-scan.
Test 4: Encoding Consistency
If your tags are pre-encoded, scan 10% of the sample lot and verify every tag returns the correct data β not just "data present" but the exact payload you specified. One mismatch in 10 is a process-control red flag.
What a Factory Test Report Should Contain
A real manufacturer's quality documentation includes:
- Test date and batch number β traceable to production records
- Sample size and pass rate β e.g., "10,000 tested, 10,000 passed, 0 rejected"
- Test parameters β read/write cycles, field strength, temperature
- Equipment used β model numbers of the test rigs
If a supplier can't produce this on request, they're either not actually manufacturing or not testing what they ship.
